on view: Auntie Likes Her Rum and Extra Old Bay
by SHAN Wallace
good neighbor is the home for the latest public art installation by acclaimed Baltimore-based artist, SHAN Wallace. Titled Auntie Likes Her Rum and Extra Old Bay.
As the third public art offering at good neighbor, Auntie Likes Her Rum and Extra Old Bay continues the shop’s pursuit of inspiring conversation by recreating the feeling of stepping into a loved one’s home. This art piece recalls SHAN Wallace’s memories of gathering with their family and community to share a meal:
“This collage honors the Baltimore tradition of sitting down and enjoying crabs with family or friends—often longtime or newly found. We savor those blue swimmers, a.k.a. Crabs, on the porch, in the dining room, at local bars and lounges, on the back patio, and sometimes at restaurants. As Baltimoreans, we know how to tackle the blue crab, laboring hard enough to get to that lump crab meat. This tradition always calls for good music, newspaper, melted butter, laughs, old bay, and moments spent going down memory lane while eating a dozen or two.”
Auntie Likes Her Rum and Extra Old Bay will be featured throughout good neighbor’s exciting programming calendar this spring and summer including local markets, community gatherings, good neighbor’s own week-long annual Design Camp, and a commemorative crab feast celebration for the artist and art.
Auntie Likes Her Rum and Extra Old Bay is on view now; free and open to the public in good neighbor’s outdoor space at 3827 Falls Road, Baltimore, MD 21211.
