Baltimore ceramicist Pamela Zhang carefully balances aesthetic intention with chance to bring you these expressive, one-of-a-kind works of art.
These handmade ceramics are created using Nerikomi, or Neriage, a decorative process established in Japan. Zhang's take on Nerikomi involves almost randomly stacking the colored clay, then rearranging the cross-section cuts until just the right pattern forms. As a final touch, Zhang also inlays upcycled clay scraps onto the pattern surface to create more deliberate decoration. This pattern is rolled out into a slab, cut to size, then put together to form the final ceramic piece.
